Adoption Information - Taking home your new babies
Babies born at tBBR are usually 100% pedigreed, but exceptions will be noted if not. Babies are ALWAYS super sweet and friendly. They all come from wonderful well known Pacific Northwest lines. I work with the many long standing breeders in the greater Seattle area and surrounding states.
Babies are between 5-6 weeks old when adopted, NO EXCEPTIONS!
Adoption fees are below:
Standard Sized Rats (All types) - $30 per rat
Dwarf Rats (All types) - $35 per rat
(ALL babies are sold/adopted on pet only contracts, unless you are a known breeder in good standing or friend. I may occasionally retain breeding rights for dwarf rats.)
*NOTE*
SOMETIMES PRIORITIES GO TO BREEDERS WHEN INDICATED.

Rats are very social animals, and work best in same sex pairs or groups. We require rats to be adopted in same sex pairs only, unless you can prove to us with a picture or other means of proof that you in fact have existing rats at your home. In general new babies do better when they have a friend to help them adapt and enjoy their new home. They need to be groomed and cuddled with, by other rats and themselves. If you do not believe this, please read the article of why rats need company.
For your new rat you will need; a cage, bedding, food, water bottle, and cage decor.
The best home for your new friends is a powder coated wire cage. The tBBR rats are currently living in their lavish Double Critter Nations, and they are highly recommended. However, Martins Cages and Quality Cages also make great cages for rats. Other types of wire cages are good too, but check for wire spacing measurements. Aquariums do not make good cages for rats as they do not provide enough air circulation, including wire cage toppers.
Bedding for the cage should be something other than PINE or CEDAR. Never use PINE or CEDAR as it can and WILL cause upper respiratory problems in most if not all rodents. Good beddings to use are made of recycled paper or shredded aspen; Carefresh, Shredded Aspen, Yesterday's News, Crown Animal Bedding (though it rather stinks when wet), etc. Currently used in the cages at tBBR is a cobbled paper cat litter called Integrity that is purchased at Mud Bay. It has been my all time favorite litter over my many years of keeping pet rats. Occasionally I will use Kaytee brand paper litters.
Cage decor consists of toys, hide boxes, hammocks, tunnels and tubes, litter boxes and whatever your rat wants to play with or hide in! I make hammocks, two layered no sew fleece hammocks. My rats LOVE them, and are always in them.
For food, we make our own. It is made up of rolled wheat, oat, barley, and triticale. Then I add black oil sunflower seeds, pasta (Egg Noodle and Variety), bran flakes, puffed rice, cheerios, rice chex, puffed wheat, puffed corn, puffed kamut, puffed kashi, and dried veggies and fruits. I usually throw other healthy, low sugar cereals in the mix for more flavor. A mix based on Suebee's diet is very good for your ratties, and there are MANY other variations out there. You just have to choose what one works best for you and your rats, based on what they like and will eat. My rats also receive on rotation Regal Rat Oxbow "kibbles" that I refer to as their "boring" food but they really enjoy it, plus it's good for them! They are also fed and have access to Harlan Lab blocks in suet feeders attached to their cages, they currently get 2014, 14% protein. Of course lots of fresh fruits and veggies, your rats wouldn't mind if you cooked for them every night! Girls can have a higher protein diet but boys need lower protein as it helps prevent respiratory disease. There is also a forbidden food list I recommend saving.
tBBR does NOT have food for sale, I'm sorry but I only make enough to feed my own rats!
We love our rats. They love us in return. When a rat is adopted, that is what is expected. They will not be sold as feeders, or to be used as "feeder breeders." That is not why we breed our rats. They are bred for extreme pet quality and health basis, and to be loved as one of the family! Show quality markings and rats are just a bonus in breeding!
If for any reason you can not keep you new pets after some time, please contact us and we will either take them back or help find them an approved, new loving home. Please know that if this time frame is LONGER then 2 weeks there will not be a refund. If there are any major medical problems within the first 24 hours, please contact tBBR asap!
If anything comes up within the first 2 weeks (both rat and human), please notify tBBR asap.
Virus Alerts
There are VERY dangerous viruses out there that can cause harm to your rats. Like humans, dogs and cats a virus suppresses the immune system, leaving a path for other infections to take over. Only with a rat virus, it is air born and can be passed through the air onto your clothes and nasal passages. Most causes of these viruses spreading comes from pet stores, and the suppliers they get their rats and rodents from, usually not being the employees fault. This being said, a rat does not have to look, act or sound sick to be hiding a terrible virus. You do not have to touch, look or sometimes even walk by the rats at a store to be contaminated. Good thing is a virus only lives outside the host rat for 3 hours, therefore if you stay away from HOME (NOT JUST YOUR RATS) for that time frame then you are safe. Take the time to save your rats lives, and yourself a lot of heartache. Being the breeder of these adopted rats, I EXPECT this information to be taken seriously.
The Rat Guide has LOTS of information about different viruses and rat care.
VET CARE
You never know when a problem may happen. Keep a good relationship with a vet in your area that treats, is willing to treat or knows about small animals. They too deserve the same treatment a dog or cat would receive. Always part of the family! And it is always better to be prepared. An after hours emergency clinic may also be desired.
